We plan to take a hike then enjoy the last sunset of 2021 as it goes down over the ocean!  We expect to step off at 3:00 p.m. and make about a four mile loop, through the Provincelands, returning for sunset at 4:19 p.m. on the beach.  The hike is easy with terrain over sand dunes with a few long, slow climbs on the paved path.

Register by December 29th, including your electronic mail address and telephone number, so I can let you know of more details and if, on the 31st, plans change if we have very bad weather.  I can be reached, via electronic mail, to [email protected] prior to the 30th.

Happy New Year!

Turkey Tramp # 41 - Things have changed - New location!

This iteration of the Turkey Tromp will NOT be at Mashamoquet Brook State Park. With the weather this past spring and summer there are a lot of trees down and trail/road washouts.

We will instead be hiking at the nearby CT Audubon’s Bufflin Sanctuary, this location has the added advantage of being easier on the knees with rolling meadows mixed with wooded areas. Since this is Audubon land they do not allow dogs.

The Audubon Society has a large visitors center where we will meet and hike from, there is plenty of parking, the indoor bathrooms are closed to the public, but there is a porta-potty. The address for the visitors center is 218 Day Road, Pomfret Center, CT  06259.

the indoor bathrooms are closed to the public, but there is a porta-potty.Let’s get post-Thanksgiving exercise and enjoy good company in the peaceful outdoors.  Please meet at 10:30 am for an 11 am sharp start.

Thirty years ago, Paul Bachand led the first Monhegan Island Chiltern hiking weekend, departing from Port Clyde, Maine, aboard the Laura B. on Saturday, May 22nd, with lodging at Monhegan House. We enjoyed it so much that we kept going back. After a couple of years, the event was moved to Labour Day weekend.

Consider joining us to celebrate this 30th anniversary with three days of hikes starting on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 28th. Each hike will consist of a few miles and a few hours (folks tend to like to stop and admire the scenery along the way) each. Difficulty varies but the routes are mostly moderate through woods and on rocky trails with ocean views and lots of ups and downs. You should be in pretty good shape and rugged footwear is recommended. There are no medical facilities on the island.

Arrange your boat transportation, to be on the island and ready for the first hike at 12:00 on the Saturday, and lodging. (Monhegan Boat Line operates from Port Clyde. Lodging options include Monhegan House, Shining Sails, Tribler Cottage, Island Inn and Trailing Yew in addition to others and cottages for rent.) Check the web site, https://monheganwelcome.com/, for more details. Registration is limited, open until May 24th and should include your electronic mail address and telephone number so I can let you know of more details and if changes need be made. I can be reached, via electronic mail to [email protected], prior to May 25th.
